In our busy schedules we forget to pause and look up. Bird watching is the gentlest of remedies: it costs nothing, demands nothing but patience, and rewards you with flashes of colour and song you would otherwise walk straight past.

Starting in Your Own Backyard

You do not need a rainforest expedition to begin. A balcony, a park bench, a window facing a tree โ€” sunbirds, bulbuls, parakeets and mynas are performing daily, free of charge. Keep a small notebook. Within a month you will know a dozen species by silhouette alone.

The Art of Stillness

Birds teach you to be still. Sit quietly for ten minutes and the garden forgets you are there; the shy ones emerge, the songs resume. In an age of constant scrolling, that stillness might be the rarest thing we can practise.

So this weekend, leave the phone inside, carry a cup of tea to the window, and watch. Nature is smiling โ€” in colour.
